“"Shiian used dark magic to place his powers in a giant ruby, planning to hide it from the other gods. When the gods came to harm Shiian, they discovered that the ruby had absorbed Shiian’s life, killing him... They called it 'The Bane of Shiian'"”
The Bane of Shiian is a powerful artifact in the form of a massive ruby. It takes its name from its creator, Shiian, a death god of an old tribe of desert people in Ninjago. It has the power to absorb the lifeforce of any living thing or creature.
History[]
Before Ninjago: Renegades[]
Ancient History[]
At one point, a tribe of desert people encountered the Bane of Shiian. For generations after, they passed down a myth of the ruby and how it was formed and hidden. Eventually, the people carved this story on a slab of rock.
The Myth[]
The Myth of the Bane of Shiian states that "the God of Death, Shiian became fearful that the other gods would turn on him due to him having the most deadly power: control over life and death. So Shiian used dark magic to place his powers in a giant ruby, planning to hide it from the other gods. When the gods came to harm Shiian, they discovered that the ruby had absorbed Shiian’s life, killing him. The gods were so fearful of the ruby, they cast it to a place that no one would ever find it. They called it 'The Bane of Shiian' and forbade anyone from searching for it. The artifact was lost to time, but its story remains as a warning for those who disobey the natural laws of the world by experimenting with dark magic."[1] While the myth claims that the Bane of Shiian was the product of a series of gods, Ninjago historians and archeologists find little evidence to the existence of these dieties.
After the Merge[]
Sometime after The Merge, the Sun King purchases the Bane of Shiian at an auction and brings it to his fortress where he can study it and learn how to use it to absorb Cyra's powers.

Trivia[]
- The Sun King's plan to use The Bane of Shiian's to drain Cyra is similar to Empress Beatrix's plan to drain a source dragon in Ninjago: Dragons Rising Season 1.
- While the specifics are unclear, it appears that to activate the Bane of Shiian, one needs a part of the thing or creature they are draining (such as a scale) and to move the Bane of Shiian into the light.[2]
